Exercise Sequence

4.0 HRS
Cockpit Preparation / Internal Safety Inspection / Power-up
00:00 – 00:10

📋 Cockpit Preparation / Internal Safety Inspection / Power-up

Guide trainees through the following:

  • Appropriate scan/flow (cold and dark with APU)
  • System checks
  • FMS set-up — flight plan and performance, with anti-ice/cold-weather considerations
  • Ensure trainees can identify anti-icing requirements and are proficient at entering the correct performance information into the FMS
  • Airways clearance sought

ATC: “XXX cleared to Sydney via CULIN PR, CULIN X departure, climb via the SID to 10 000’, SQ 4204, DEP frequ 124.50”

  • Clearance read back correct
  • Departure briefing — crosswind take-off considerations and windshear awareness

CA: XX POB

  • Confirm head count and close up
  • Complete Before-start checklist

📘 Teaching Notes

Engine Abnormal Start and Taxi
00:10 – 00:30

📋 Engine Abnormal Start and Taxi

Guide trainees through the following:

  • Normal start procedure
  • Engine abnormal start — limitations, recognition (hot start, hung start, etc) and correct actions
  • Cold weather considerations on taxi — anti-ice selections (OFF / ENG / ALL), engine warm-up
  • Appropriate scan/flow used
  • Ground crew interaction
  • Review start temp limits and observe timings
  • After start sequence
  • Taxi path clear before brakes release

ATC: “XXX line up runway 35”

📘 Teaching Notes

Windshear Events on Take-off
00:30 – 00:50

📋 Windshear Events on Take-off

Guide the trainees through known Windshear management techniques (flap, runway, TO1 etc) and discuss the ERJ 170/190 indications of windshear and guidance system.

Discuss actions in the event of windshear without EGPWS announcement. SOP manual 2-83 refers.

To complete manoeuvre select HDG or NAV, FLCH, engage A/P and retract flap on schedule.

Post mod 27.1 the use of FMS speeds is recommended. LNAV is armed after pressing TO/GA button, engaging at 200’. VNAV is armed after pressing TO/GA, engaging according to the go-around limits page.

ATC: “XXX runway 35 cleared for take-off”

  • Normal take-off
  • Windshear events on take-off — repeat as necessary to standard
  • To reduce unnecessary turbulence and sensory overload, consider using the UPRT model and increase tailwind on take-off to simulate windshear
  • Once windshear sequences complete, hand over to departures on 124.50

ATC: “Turn right HDG 090 and climb to 10 000’”

📘 Teaching Notes

Flight Control Jams
00:50 – 01:00

📋 Flight Control Jams

Ensure trainees are familiar with the actions in the event of a flight control roll or pitch jam.

  • Give the trainees a pitch jam during the climb. Exercise finishes upon completion of the checklist and subsequent management items.
  • Issue heading instructions and give the trainees a roll jam in the turn.

Cover with the trainees:

  • Memory items
  • Considerations
  • Management plan
  • Ensure the crew sees both a pitch and roll jam as PF and PM for improved training outcomes

📘 Teaching Notes

Engine In-flight Shutdown & Driftdown
01:00 – 01:20

📋 Engine In-flight Shutdown & Driftdown

Reposition to FL350 established in the cruise. Guide the trainees on the engine failure and driftdown procedure.

Reinforce the differences between load 25 and 27.1:

  • With load 27.1 the auto thrust automatically commands CON and cruise alt as EO MAX ALT
  • FMS commands green dot if FMS speed is used
  • Vertical mode transitions to FLCH if a lower altitude is set, once A/C slows to green dot
  • Green dot cannot be used with load 25 and a “STALL PROT ICE SPEED” message

Cover with the trainees:

  • Memory items (if fire, severe damage or separation)
  • Area of responsibility
  • Shutdown procedure
  • Driftdown procedure
  • Engine air re-start checklist

FREEZE POSITION on completion.

📘 Teaching Notes

RNP Approach RW35 with Windshear
01:20 – 01:30

📋 RNP Approach RW35 with Windshear

Descent planning should have been rehearsed in the classroom. If needed after the driftdown event, reposition to extended final prior to IAF.

  • RNP approach RW 35
  • Demonstrate use of temperature compensation
  • On short final, introduce moderate tailwind or windshear scenario
  • Train windshear procedures on landing and subsequent TACA (thrust, attitude, configuration, automation) for clean-up of aircraft utilising go-around procedure once clear of windshear

ATC: “Cleared RNP approach 35”

ATC: “Contact tower 118.7”

📘 Teaching Notes

Pilot Incapacitation & ILS
01:30 – 01:45

📋 Pilot Incapacitation & ILS

Reposition onto final for an ILS approach with FD, crosswind 15 knots. For second student, an incapacitation on take-off (no V1 call) will increase training outcomes.

  • Incapacitated PM before “Gear down flap 3”
  • Continue to land OR:
  • Incapacitation at V1
  • Subsequent return-to-land workflow

ATC: “Contact ground 121.7”

📘 Teaching Notes

After Landing
01:45 – 01:50

📋 After Landing

  • Vacate runway
  • Taxi to parking
  • Taxi speed control
  • APU ON
  • After landing scan / flow

📘 Teaching Notes

Shutdown
REFERENCE

📋 Shutdown

  • No external AC power
  • Shutdown scan / flow
  • Timing

BREAK 15 mins then repeat for trainee 2 from windshear events.
